Victorinox is the largest manufacturer of pocket knives in the world, but not as well known is their watchmaking business, which has been a staple in Swiss-made watchmaking since their introduction into the market in A Brief History Headquartered in Ibach, Switzerland, Victorinox dates back to when it was founded as a cutlery manufacturer. Victorinox watches are a relatively recent addition to Swiss watchmaking, with their first watches released in Known for their unrelenting and uncompromising quality standards, Victorinox watches utilize rugged construction, high-quality materials, and Swiss-made movements. Is there anything more Swiss than a watchmaker that also manufactures the venerable Swiss Army Knife?
Welcome to Victorinox
To begin with the standards and marking were controlled by the local Guilds. These assay offices were established by law, superseding the medieval Guild system of regulation. These hallmarks were used for plate, vessels and candlesticks etc.
With its latest boutique, the Swiss watch manufacturer offers visitors a new way to experience the world of Carl F. Bucherer. The interior exudes understated luxury, accentuated by the golden elements of the brand logo, launched in , and the distinctive brand imagery that also reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the city of Lucerne.
China may not be the first country that springs to mind when it comes to the manufacture of watches, but in fact they have a long albeit not quite as long as some European countries history of fine watch making dating back to the ‘s. Things really started picking up in the ‘s when venerable Swiss manufacturer Venus sold them the tooling for the caliber chronograph movement which was then used to produce the Project pilot’s watch see “Seagull Chinese Air Force” below and since then they haven’t looked back!
For possibly the most extensive collection of Chinese watches on the Internet that certainly puts my meagre collection to shame, I recommend you check out the Alberta Museum of Chinese Horology. Alpha watches are made in China to an impressively high standard given their modest price. The watch is powered by a mechanical, 21 jewel automatic movement. Perhaps not a true “jump hour” as such, what they’ve done here is replace the hour and minute hands with dials that are numbered anti-clockwise.
As the dials rotate clockwise, the time can then be read off against an index mark printed on the viewing window – an interesting addition to any collection I think. To reduce the overall thickness of the final watch, the rotors at the bottoms of two automatic movements are removed. Thickness is further reduced by relocating the second hand from the centre position of one movement to a subdial located at 6 O’Clock and then removing the second hand of the other movement but exposing the balance wheel to serve the function of a second hand instead.
The two movements are then fused together to form a double-sided, hand-winding watch with hands independently adjustable on each side giving dual time zone functionality. Another little marvel from the Chinese Alpha stable. This time a 17 jewel manual wind skeleton watch in a “tank” style.

Identifying Swiss Army Knives The term “Swiss Army knife”, the red color and the cross-and-shield symbol are all registered trademarks that may only be used by Victorinox and Wenger. However that has not stopped many other companies from producing “copycat” knives. Here’s how to tell real Swiss Army knives from junk:

The Spanish engineer Dr. Ramon Casas Robert returned to his parents’ home in after completing his studies. Whilst at home he was asked to repair an old sewing machine, this gave him the opportunity to study the mechanism in which he became totally absorbed. He remembered he had friends who had a corset factory and paid them a visit. It is common belief that these friends may have also included an Aunt.
He was astonished by the number of special industrial machines employed which had a cylindrical arm on which tubular pieces of fabric could be sewn. His inventor’s mind quickly thought of the housewife and her need to repair trouser legs or sleeves; he realized that the dimensions of such a machine would need to be reduced. Thus the idea that gave birth to the first modern household sewing machine with a free arm was conceived.
It is thought a working prototype had been completed by The machine design included a free arm, built-in motor and light.

However, after a request from the the archivist of the Incorporation of Goldsmiths, who looks after the historical records of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Assay Offices, the editor of the NAWCC Bulletin has allowed the article to be made publicly available and it can now be downloaded by clicking on this this link: My research has also been incorporated in the latest version of Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks, you can read about this at Bradbury’s Book of Hallmarks.

The Swiss engineer Hans W. Egli was the manufacturer of the very powerful rack and pinion calculator, which had a unique multiplying block and was later widely used also in the U. The purchase of the Millionaire is confirmed in another document possibly a press release. No information on the acquisition of a Millionaire can be found in the minutes of the board of ETH Zurich. This is surprising, as such machines were very expensive in those days. At that time, the Polytechnic was mainly working with analog, logarithmic slide rules.

Colt Competition Pistol On November 22, , the Boston Herald printed a glowing report about Borchardt and his new pistol, noting that Georg Luger exhibited the new gun before a U. Navy small arms board at Providence, R. Also of interest is the fact that although the press gave it an excellent notice the U. Navy failed to follow up the tests with any further trials of the Borchardt Pistol. Georg Luger was more than an employee of the new firm of DWM. He received a handsome salary, could patent all of his inventions at company cost and had all of his traveling expenses cared for by the firm.
Having no definite office hours, he was more of a partner with a fixed salary and a lengthy contract. After five years his salary was doubled and his contract extended. A point of interest which should be interjected here is that Luger spelled his name exactly that way. His personal signature, as early as , bears this out, and members of the Luger family do not recall the name ever having been spelled any other way.
According to close friends and relations, Borchardt and Luger were the best of personal friends though they often had their differences at the factory. Years after the deaths of their husbands the two widows were constant companions. Luger had a son, Georg, Jr.

Rubin cartridges with a caliber of 8. The Hebler cartridge, which had a paper-mache core, attained a prodigious velocity but the Rubin pattern proved to be far more accurate. Wittner Metronomes Germany Wittner. Established in by Gustav Wittner another watchmaker , the Wittner company has flourished to become today’s largest manufacturer of the modern day metronome. The design, shape and appearance of the pyramid style metronome has changed little over three generations although new modern patterns and designs, such as the Taktell model proved to be hugely successful. In , after earning an engineering education with Maybach, Rudolf Wittner at the age of 22 took over his fathers still relatively small hand to mouth metronome production business and raised the bar significantly moving the business closer to the Black forest and the source of the wood used in production.
In and with an ever increasing demand for their musical accessories, Rudolf again moved production to larger premises in Isny Allgau and where Wittner production is still based today under the leadership of Rudolf’s son Horst. Seth Thomas founded the company in Starting his early career as a woodworker he went into partnership with Eli Terry and Silas Hoadley in constructing and manufacturing clocks, selling his share of the business in and starting out on his own in Plymouth Hollow.
Over the next 45 years Seth Thomas built an empire and pioneered mass production of primarily clocks from his factory as well as running a cotton mill and a wire-making firm. He died in , succeeded by his sons, Seth Jnr, Edward and Aaron and was rewarded with the town of Plymouth Hollow being renamed in his honour – Thomaston. The Seth Thomas company, already hugely successful in the manufacture of clocks incorporated metronomes into their catalogue, initially purchasing units from Paquet and re-branding with the Seth Thomas name and logo.
The firm went on to manufacture their own in house metronome in which continued until Seth Thomas Jnr Jnr ran the business from before his death.
