Next The ignition coil is the part of your engine that produces high voltage in order to power your cylinders. The distributor is what gets that high voltage from the coil to the right cylinder. The following instructions are for creating a MegaSquirt to Relay Board cable. It is for those who are creating their own harness. With both boxes mounted, measure the distance between them from DB connector to DB connector – this will be the length that you will cut the individual wires. If you are not using a Relay Board, allow enough length in each of your wires to reach the target component.
It is often better to be too long and trim afterwards, than to be too short and have to splice additional lengths on. For a Relay Board cable, you can move both heat shrink pieces to the center of the wire length, and then twisting the center of the wire with a few twists to hold the heat shrink in place, so that it does not fall off the wire or run down while soldering the connection.
For a pigtail, you can slip the heat shrink tubing on later. Orient them so that both are facing the same way, with pins 1 – 19 closest to you. You will definitely want something to hold the connector, since as you attach more wires it wants to move around more, while at the same time you have less room to solder. Having it held stable helps a lot. Run one wire from pin 7 to pin 7 there are numbers on the plastic surrounding the connector’s pins and solder both ends.
Repeat with pins 8, 9, 10, 11 and 19 this one is important – it is the return wire for the coolant temperature sensor, air temperature sensor, and TPS. Run each of these one at a time, starting with pin 20 to pin 20, then another wire from 21 to 21, etc. And, if you are using shielded wire for the coil like RG or audio cable , the center lead connects to pin 24 and the ground to pin 25 – make sure you run a wire from the terminal strip “S1” terminal to engine ground.

Whether you start the engine with a pull rope or the turn of a key on an electric start motor, you’re relying on the ignition system to produce a spark inside the combustion chamber. When you start your lawn mower or small engine, you turn the flywheel and its magnets pass the coil or armature. This creates a spark.

For most people it is only a matter of lack of knowledge, perhaps followed by getting some bad information. How the coil works with points and condenser to create a high voltage spark is covered in another article. This article is a discussion about electrical polarity of the coil and spark plugs. The ignition coil is essentially a low voltage to high voltage transformer with about to 1 ratio of windings and voltage. The coil case is not grounded, and both primary and secondary windings inside are “floating” or isolated from the case.
The only thing the windings have in common is one end connected to the same primary terminal, and it really doesn’t matter much which one.

The coil in the center is a period accessory style Lucas High Energy Coil. This has it’s own unique bracket with the Lucas logo in blue. The high tension connector is original screw in type. Primary terminals are original screw posts. The coil on the right is a modern Lucas Sport Coil 40, volts capacity.
The gold color case is standard for this item as well as the bracket with the black sticker. The high tension terminal has the more modern push in type connector. The primary terminals have screwed on Lucar connectors which can be removed if you want to use early style ring lugs for the wire connectors.

Wasted spark with multiple coils It can also support coil per plug in some installs. For wasted spark you require a minimum of single “missing tooth” crank wheel, only engines with an even number of cylinders being supported. You need at least for 4cyl, for 6cyl or for 8cyl. For a distributor based setup with a trigger wheel, simply follow all of the wheel decoder instructions but rather than setting SparkB, C, etc as outputs as in a wasted spark setup only set LED17 as SparkA output and ensure all other spark outs are NOT set: The downside is that it is more difficult than EDIS and requires extra software settings.
Before setting up the wheel decoder, several questions should be asked: This matters because the camshaft turns half a revolution for every crank revolution. This will also help determine how to set things up later. When you have all this information, you’re at least ready to start. How do I test coil???
This system uses the same basic electrical troubleshooting procedures as the coil in cap system, so use that page as a reference and guide for troubleshooting and repair. The difference is that the coil is mounted remotely and there is some slight difference in identifying the connections and terminals. Use a DVOM for testing, calibrate meter scale some do automatically to read zero when the leads are touching each other. Do this before testing coil to insure greatest accuracy.
